5 Things That Will Make Your Anxiety Worse: Substance Abuse (Part 5 of 5)

1

For years, I battled severe anxiety, struggling to find relief and effective solutions. I was seeking help from health care practitioners, but no one addressed the impact of lifestyle choices on my anxiety. Instead, I received messages suggesting that my brain was “broken” or that past trauma would forever hold me back. The truth is, I found my way to recovery by understanding how the mind works and embracing real solutions. This is why I created this blog  – to help you realize that you can overcome anxiety without years of struggle. In this article, we’ll explore five common habits that may be making your anxiety worse and preventing your recovery.

For many individuals, coping with anxiety, leads them down a path of substance abuse. Sadly, while turning to substances may offer temporary relief, it only perpetuates the anxiety, creating a vicious cycle that can trap you in a harmful loop. Understanding this complex relationship is vital to break free from the grip of substance abuse and address the underlying anxiety effectively.

  • Self-Medication: Anxiety can leave individuals feeling trapped, desperate for respite from the overwhelming emotional turmoil. In an attempt to alleviate their distress, some turn to drugs or alcohol as a form of self-medication. Substances provide a temporary escape from anxiety’s grip, offering a brief sense of calm and relaxation. Unfortunately, this immediate relief comes at a significant cost, as continued substance use can lead to dependence and addiction, exacerbating the very anxiety it was meant to alleviate.
  • A False Sense of Confidence and Control: One of the underlying drivers of substance abuse in individuals with anxiety is the desire for control. Anxiety often leaves individuals feeling powerless and vulnerable, and substances may provide a sense of control over your emotions and circumstances. Many people drink in social situations to help them deal with social anxiety and deep insecurities. But this is like putting a bandaid over an infected wound. The wound does not heal until the infection is eliminated. How much better it is for you to deal with the underlying insecurities within your subconscious mind.
  • Escalating Tolerance and Withdrawal: As substance abuse persists, the body and mind develop tolerance to the substances, requiring higher doses to achieve the same level of relief. Paradoxically, this escalating tolerance can intensify anxiety during periods of withdrawal, compounding the individual’s emotional distress and prompting them to continue using substances to avoid these negative feelings.
  • Failure to Address Root Cause: Substance abuse fails to address the root cause of anxiety and often creates new anxiety triggers. The guilt, shame, and secrecy associated with substance abuse can lead to increased levels of anxiety in social situations or when facing loved ones. Additionally,  the consequences of substance abuse can generate anxiety about the future, compounding the individual’s emotional burden.
  • Negative Reinforcement: If you experience temporary relief from anxiety through substance use, your brain begins to associate the substances with relief, creating a cycle that could lead to addiction. This negative pattern will also prevent you from finding healthier coping mechanisms for stress and prevent you from finding the true empowerment that leads to peace of mind.
